Tesco Mobile Leads Mobile Industry For Customer Satisfaction

Tesco Mobile, the joint venture mobile partnership between Tesco and O2, has come out top in the Which? annual Mobile Phone Satisfaction survey for contract and SIM-only customers.

With high ratings across the board of categories, Tesco Mobile was commended for its value, customer service and range of handsets, trumping competition from industry Goliaths including Vodafone and EE.

The network was also named as a Which? Recommended Provider for both mobile contract and Pay as you go.

Happy customers gave the network an impressive 72% overall score for contract, with Which? stating it “ticks all the boxes ...and it’s not hard to see why its customers are satisfied.”  It scored 71% for Pay as you go overall customer satisfaction.

The recognition from Which? Is hot off the heels of a number of initiatives launched by the mobile provider to carve a niche in the market as a network that challenges the industry norms.

Tesco Mobile is the only network to have launched a Tariff Promise; its commitment to not raising core tariff prices in the middle of a contract.  Which?’s report showed that 22% of mobile contract customer had seen an increase in their bill over the past year.

Other family friendly unique services launched by the network include:

  • Family Perks – which provides one bill for up to five Pay Monthly or SIM only subscriptions under the same roof and gives useful perks such as extra data to all members on the same account
  • Capped tariff - customers can fix their tariff so they only use their inclusive minutes, texts and data, and their monthly bill is never more than the cost of their tariff

Simon Groves, Chief Marketing Officer, Tesco Mobile says:

“Tesco Mobile has had a fantastic year so far, with our customer base growing to over 3.5 million. We feel that the Which? survey reflects how the mobile market is changing – customers are not sticking to traditional operators, but instead are getting increasingly savvy and looking to newer alternatives for the best possible value and service.”

Notes to editors:
The Which? Mobile Phone Satisfaction Survey asked over 8,000 customers about their experiences with the mobile network to form the customer satisfaction score. They were asked how satisfied they were with their provider, their store and how likely they were to recommend the network to a friend.

Tesco Mobile Tariff Promise

Tesco Mobile Tariff Promise

Tesco Mobile announces commitment to fixed contract charges
as competitors reap £217m* of customers’ money in hidden tariff increases

Today, Tesco Mobile has announced a promise to fix customers’ contract tariff costs.

Its Tariff Promise is a commitment never to raise its customers’ core tariff prices mid-contract, the first move of its kind amongst network providers in the UK.

This makes it the only provider to pledge that the tariff price a customer signs-up to at the start of a contract, will be the same price they pay for the entire contract term at no additional cost to the customer.

Tesco Mobile has never raised its Pay-Monthly tariff costs mid-contract and is dedicated to continuing this.
Recent research  has revealed that 70% of consumers who have taken out a mobile contract did not know networks could increase prices during the contract period.

The Tesco Mobile research* found additional unknown tariff costs were a major bug bear for customers.
One in four (25%) cite rising tariff prices mid-contract as a major irritant, with slow mobile internet (27%) and complicated tariffs (26%)  also being grounds for frustration.

And with network providers raising tariff costs by a median of 81p[1] a month, Tesco Mobile estimates that in one year alone, UK consumers have spent around £217 million extra on their phone bills.

Simon Groves, Chief Marketing Officer of Tesco Mobile said:

“We believe it’s only fair to stick to the contract that we make with our customers, and see no reason to change the core tariff price that a customer has signed up to. We’ve never put our Pay-Monthly tariff prices up mid-contract and this Tariff Promise demonstrates our continued commitment to our customers.  Being open and honest with them is incredibly important to us and we’re proud to be setting an example of best in class mobile service.”

Notes to editors:
In some circumstances the prices for services that fall outside of the core monthly tariff, and are billed incrementally when these services are used by the customer, may need to be amended.
Examples include premium rate or non-geographic numbers, directory enquiries, making calls and sending texts internationally, using your phone aboard or VAT rate amendments. These services are provided by third parties, and changes to third party pricing out of Tesco Mobile’s control may need to be passed on.

Tesco Mobile Tariff promise – what uSwitch has to say

Commenting on Tesco’s commitment to fixed prices in mobile phone contracts, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com , says: “This is more welcome news for consumers who have often been left feeling misled and out of pocket after signing up to a fixed-term contract only to discover the hard way that prices aren’t fixed.

“Following EE’s announcement that from April its customers will have the option to fix the price of their monthly bills for a small premium, this move from Tesco arguably goes one step further – by ensuring that customers automatically benefit from no price rises, rather than by opting in and paying a premium. By ensuring that all plans have a fixed price for their duration, it brings some much-needed clarity and reassurance.

“Tesco have now become the second mobile provider to bring in changes ahead of Ofcom’s consultation on fixed prices for the length of contract – and it’s great to see networks taking the initiative and acting off their own back.

“However, while clarity and transparency are vital, it’s important that customers aren’t made to pay for them through higher handset costs or more expensive tariffs. Tesco has to maintain the value it currently offers, and not pass on any potential price increases to customers at the start of the contract. Customers also have to be protected from facing a hefty increase in their monthly bill if they want to stick with their plan when their contract ends.

“But this promise is a big step in the right direction for better consumer protection and is especially welcome in a time of rising bills and tighter household budgets. We hope that other mobile providers follow suit, and that all mobile phone customers benefit from greater clarity and protection against unexpected price rises.”

uSwitch Awards Mobile Awards 2012: Tesco Mobile wins big in people's choice awards

The annual uSwitch.com award results are in, revealing the UK’s most popular mobile manufacturers, networks and retailers. The winners, as voted for by consumers and a judging panel of industry experts, were announced last night at a glittering ceremony at Circus in London.

People’s choice:
• Tesco Mobile triumphs overall, scooping Best Value for Money in both the Pay As You Go and Pay Monthly categories, Best Customer Support, Best Network Coverage and Best Perks and Freebies

• The People’s Choice Award for Best For Roaming goes to Three
• Apple wins two People’s Choice Awards this year: Best Design and Most Easy to Use Phone

Judges’ choice:
• Best Network: for a second year running, Three wins this coveted award
• Best Manufacturer: Samsung fights off tough competition to scoop the gong for the second year in a row
• Best Retailers: Carphone Warehouse takes the high street crown again, while Phones4U wins the Online Award.

The second annual uSwitch.com Mobile Awards, held last night in London, revealed a shakeup in the mobile market as supermarket giant Tesco Mobile cleaned up. The retailers move into the mobile market has clearly gone down well with consumers who voted the retailer top in a record five out of nine possible awards.

In the categories voted for by consumers, mobile giants went head-to-head in a bid to win the network awards, but Tesco Mobile streaked ahead of the competition. Its biggest win came in the Value for Money categories with almost nine out of ten Pay As You Go (84%) and Pay Monthly (85%) customers happy with the network.

Consumers also voted Tesco Mobile top for Best Customer Support, with a clear majority of the vote (69%). A virtual assistant and live chat service as well as a customer care team contactable seven days a week no doubt boosted the provider’s scores in this category.

Champions in two further People’s Choice Awards, Tesco Mobile triumphed in Best Network Coverage with almost eight out of ten customers (78%) agreeing that Tesco stands out from the crowd. Despite stiff competition from O2 and Orange, Tesco Mobile also snatched the Best Perks category by a slim majority (47%) thanks to several unique selling points, including its Family Perks[1] offer, providing families with one bill for multiple contracts and the ability to manage them all simultaneously.

A hotly contested category and a bone of contention for many a mobile user, a massive 60% of consumers voted for Three to be named Best for Roaming, with its pioneering holiday data roaming package, the Euro Internet Pass[2], allowing unlimited mobile internet use for £5 per day.

Notable by its absence in other categories, it was fitting that technology giant Apple achieved great coups in both the Most Easy to Use Phone and Best Design awards, with a whopping 86% and 85% of the votes respectively. Apple proves it has the monopoly on intuitive, user- rather than programmer-friendly products such as the iPhone.

Away from Apple, big hitters including HTC and Sony were left to fight it out for the best use of Google’s operating system. But thanks to cornering the phablet market with the Galaxy Notes and the multi-million selling Galaxy S3, Samsung's showing in the mobile market saw the Korean manufacturer take the prize for Best Use of Android.

The Judges’ Choice – a panel of technology journalists and industry insiders also gave their verdicts on the networks, handset manufacturers and retailers they saw as breaking new ground in the mobile market over the last 12 months.

The distinguished panel, which included Carly Page, Dan Simmons and Jonathan Morris, awarded Three and Samsung with Best Network and Best Manufacturer respectively – both winners for the second year running. Bringing innovation with the One Plan and HSPA+ services, ranging the latest devices and constantly competitive pricing, Three has cemented its place as a major player in the mobile market while the amazing successes of the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note - as well as its strength in the entry-level market – helped Samsung rise to power as one of the major smartphone manufacturers.

Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U were voted Best High Street and Online Retailer respectively. For this category, the judges looked at every aspect of the service provided by the stores, including value for money, the variety of handsets on offer and the standard of customer service.

Ernest Doku, communications expert at uSwitch.com, says: “Tesco Mobile has seriously upped its game to win the majority of People’s Choice Awards, many of which are to do with customer support and value for money – which sets them apart in the current economic climate.

“When it comes to their mobile, it’s vital that consumers get the biggest bang for their buck. Yes, it’s important to people that they can take great photos and access the web on the go, but fancy features fall flat when poor network coverage and expensive rates make the basic functions of calling and texting difficult.

“Innovation stands out. Three was the first network to bring unlimited data to UK customers and is now leading the way with roaming abroad. Brits know what they want and our awards show that consumers recognise great products and services when they see them, and vote with their feet and wallets too.”

Mums feel the pressure as they juggle twelve 'jobs'

New report reveals the rise of the multitasking SMARTmum

From cooking to consultancy, medicine to maths, British mums are holding down a whopping 12 jobs at a time, doing more work at home on a daily basis than the majority of us do a week.

And it’s not just at home that mum is working hard, with two thirds (64%) of mums juggling their 12 ‘mum’ roles alongside full or part time work according to the Tesco Mobile Family Matters Index.

Dubbed the ‘SMARTmum’, for running so many different tasks at once, the mums of Britain are taking on the role of everything from stock controller to travel agent and family PA to party planner, according to the report commissioned to mark the launch of Tesco Mobile Family perks.

Whilst mum takes on a dozen roles a day, in most British households, dad sticks to the traditional tasks of handyman (66%) and sports coach (50%).

Both mum and dad take turns to play taxi driver, sharing a 50/50 responsibility for ferrying around the kids.
But, SMARTmums are feeling under pressure to keep the household plates spinning. A substantial 76% admitted they need help to manage the household and almost all - 94% - said they feel the household chores are never-ending.

Dr Katherine Rake, Chief Executive of the Family and Parenting Institute comments:  “Mums today not only work longer hours both at work and within the home, but are also the lynchpin of family life and the hub for family communication. Parents today are under pressure from all sorts of angles, so whist they should be celebrated for their multitasking magnitude, they always appreciate support in balancing work, life, childcare and managing the family finances.”
A mother’s work is never done – the many jobs of a SMARTmum:
• Cleaner (82% of households)
• Nurse (80%)
• Stock controller (77%)
• Chef (76%)
• Household PA (76%)
• Party organiser (75%)
• Counsellor (73%)
• Teacher (70%)
• Relationship expert (69%)
• Tour guide (61%)
• Travel agent (60%)
• Accountant (59%)

Pet friendly handsets for pampered pooches?...we’re pulling your leg!

APRIL FOOLS!

You may have seen the news that Tesco Mobile was set to become the first mobile phone operator in the UK to introduce a range of mobile phone handsets and  ‘pay per bark tariffs’ for the canine members of the family. The revolutionary doggy dial technology, or Petfone, was supposedly being manufactured by Welwyn Garden City based CanineComs.

Well, we’re sorry to say, that although we at Tesco Mobile view our four legged friends as very much part of the family, we don’t have any plans to extend our range of mobile offerings to pets just yet, so Rex, Lassie and Bonnie are going to have to wait for their mobile moment.

We’ll leave you with this gorgeous picture of Tesco Mobile’s very own pug Pugsley sporting the slim line handset. Happy April 1st everyone!

Tesco Mobile Beats ‘Big Four’ for Customer Satisfaction

Supermarket’s Mobile Phone Network Ranked Number One in Which? Annual Mobile Phone Satisfaction Survey.

9th  March 2012

Tesco Mobile has topped the 2012 Which? Annual Mobile Phone Satisfaction survey for contract and SIM-only*; marking a great start to the year for the fast growing virtual mobile network.
Tesco Mobile was also the only network to achieve a five star rating for cost; beating off competition from industry Goliaths such as Vodafone, T Mobile and O2.

The network was also named as a recommended provider in the Pay as you go category - customers were more impressed with the customer service received from Tesco Mobile than the ‘big four’ mobile phone networks.

In addition to a focus on supreme service, initiatives such as triple credit on Pay as you go tariffs and a capped service for any Pay Monthly tariff have enabled Tesco Mobile customers to have control of their spend and get fantastic value.

Roger Fogg, Chief Executive Officer, Tesco Mobile & Tesco Telecom says:
“We know that consumers are increasingly shopping around for the best value and the best service when it comes to their mobile choices and we know that by offering the best of both worlds we can be the number one choice for families.

It’s fantastic to get an accolade like this from Which? recognising our commitment to customers.”

Tesco top for mobile service at 2011 Which? Awards

Tesco Mobile has today been crowned Best Mobile Service Provider at the prestigious Which? Awards, beating off stiff competition from Asda and 02.

The award recognises providers that offer both value for money and a great customer experience across PAYG Mobile Services, Contract Mobile Services (including Sim-only), and Mobile Broadband, and is based on Which?’s regular customer satisfaction surveys.

Pay-monthly contract customers awarded Tesco Mobile a customer score of 74 per cent in a recent customer satisfaction survey. The supermarket scored particularly well on cost due to its competitive tariffs and 12 month contracts.

Peter Vicary-Smith, Chief Executive of Which?, says:

“To win a Which? Award, not only must a company offer outstanding products or services, it must also deliver exceptional value and a great customer experience.  This is especially important at a time when consumers are really feeling the pinch.

“Tesco isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of mobile phones but it is outdoing many of the established providers when it comes to customer satisfaction.”

Tesco Mobile Rings in Bumper Christmas

Tesco Mobile has reached the milestone of 2.5 million customers on Christmas Day this year after experiencing its best ever Christmas sales.

Tens of thousands of Tesco Mobile handsets were activated on Christmas Day with the iPhone proving the most popular Christmas gift for customers.

The network experienced double digit airtime growth in every quarter of 2010 as it attracted new customer types through new service and product offerings.

It is still the only network to offer the iPhone on a 12 month contract for consumers and now has a comprehensive selection of smartphones in its range including the iPhone 4 and newest Blackberry models.

The award winning network* grew both its Pay as you go and contract base in every quarter of 2010 despite a highly competitive mobile market.

This success has seen Tesco Mobile grow its customer numbers by 25% in 2010.  This year saw the network move into the contract market bringing more choice for consumers with the launch of 12 month contracts as well as market leading 24 month options.

Tesco Mobile continues to innovate in the mobile tariff space, recently launching two new deals aimed at the youth market, offering low cost monthly contracts with a high end handset and unlimited social networking.

The mobile operator is a joint venture between Tesco and O2 which utilises the O2 network and therefore provides first class national coverage for both voice and data, a choice factor for consumers which is becoming increasingly more vital as the uptake of mobile data rapidly increases.

Growth of the Tesco Mobile network has also been fuelled by the roll out of Tesco Phone Shops.

There are now almost 200 Phone Shops across the UK providing Tesco shoppers with convenient access to a comprehensive range of Tesco Mobile phones, mobiles for other major networks, accessories, broadband services, landlines, top up and Tesco international calling card.

*Best Pay as you go mobile network for customer satisfaction – Uswitch mobile survey 2010 and J.D Power and Associates Mobile user customer satisfaction report 2010.

The retailer has just launched its first standalone Phone Shop in Bristol allowing customers on the high street to benefit from Tesco Phone Shop value and have access to the Tesco Mobile brand.

Tesco Phone Shops have also seen growth internationally across the Tesco estate and there are now Phone Shops in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Turkey and South Korea.

Lance Batchelor, Chief Executive Officer of Tesco Mobile and Tesco Telecoms said: "Tesco Mobile is well on its way to becoming the number one MVNO in the UK. It is continuing to grow its Pay as you go and Pay Monthly base in a declining market space which highlights the network's appeal to our mobile savvy nation. We have a unique position in the mobile market place because we are able to reward customers in hundreds of ways through Clubcard. We're focused on giving consumers real and valuable rewards that encourage their loyalty and help them get the best value from their provider. The rapid expansion of the network of Tesco Phone Shops in 2010 has enabled us to deliver service and value through telecoms retailing to millions of Tesco Shoppers and has brought Tesco Mobile as a network to the attention of consumers."

Tesco Mobile Number One Network for Customer Satisfaction

J.D. Power and Associates 2010 UK Mobile Telephone Customer Satisfaction Study results out.

Tesco Mobile has beaten the traditional mobile networks to the coveted spot of number one Pay as you go mobile network for customer satisfaction, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 UK Mobile Telephone Customer Satisfaction Study.

The authoritative industry study measures customer satisfaction with Pay as you go and contract plans among the leading UK mobile network providers.

The study highlighted that usefulness of incentives and rewards offered is the most important aspect of offerings and promotions and is a key opportunity for networks such as Tesco Mobile to differentiate themselves and elevate mobile customer satisfaction.

The J.D. Power and Associates study backs up other industry polls that also show Tesco Mobile leading the market. CFI Group has ranked Tesco Mobile as number one for overall customer satisfaction for the previous 14 consecutive quarters and the Which? Magazine awarded Tesco Mobile Pay as you go a Best buy award in May 2010.

Lance Batchelor, Chief Executive Officer for Tesco Mobile and Tesco Telecoms said, "Tesco Mobile is all about great value and exemplary customer service, so it's great news to have such a powerful endorsement to show we're getting it right for customers."

The J.D. Power and Associates 2010 UK Mobile Telephone Customer Satisfaction StudySM is based on responses from 3,300 Pay as you go and contract mobile phone customers throughout the UK. The study was fielded in March and April 2010.
