Bandwidth

Bandwidth is the width or capacity of a communications channel that determines the rate of data transfer. Generally speaking, the bigger the bandwidth the better: more data can be transferred at a quicker speed. Bandwidth is usually measured in Bits per Second (Bit/s) or Megabits per Second (Mbit/s).

Bluetooth

Dual-band means a mobile phone can operate across two separate radio frequencies. Dual-band for a GSM mobile phone usually means the 900/1800 MHz frequencies in Europe or 850/1900 MHz frequencies in North America.

EDGE

EDGE stands for Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. EDGE is an improvement on the GSM wireless technology. EDGE is an improvement on existing technology and not necessarily a third generation, it is often referred to as 2.75G. EDGE is used for the purpose of wireless data transfer, such as sharing pictures and videos or browsing the internet via a mobile phone connection.

GB (Gigabyte)

A GB is a measure of computer data storage capacity and is roughly a billion bytes. A Gigabyte is 1,024 Megabytes or 1,048,576 Kilobytes.

GPRS

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a method of enhancing 2G phones to enable them to send and receive data more rapidly. With a GPRS connection a phone can transfer data immediately and at speeds: typically 32 - 48 kbps.

GSM

GSM stands for 'Global System for Mobile Communication' and is the most popular 2G mobile phone standard in the world.

HLR (Home Location Register)

The HLR is a database that stores and manages subscriptions of GSM subscribers. It contains all permanent subscriber information which includes the subscribers profile and activity status.

Hotspots

A hotspot is a site that offers internet access over a wireless local area network through the use of a router. The router will be connected to an internet service provider.
